History 


The independent non -commercial organization the Telecommunication centre "Science and society " has been created in December, 1999 as the successor of the charitable project of the George Soros Fund "Internet Moscow Project ", and at the present moment is the owner and the manager of the Southern Moscow Supporting Network (UMOS).

Southern Moscow Supporting Network was created in 1994. The purpose of its creation was maintenance of the communication environment for the academic institutes of Moscow. This program was initially focused on the organizations of the Russian academy of Science.

First UMOS line was built in 1995. It has connected Space Research Institute and Presidium of Academy of Science. First nodes produced by Cisco company were installed also in several institutes. The length of the line comprised 21 kilometer.
There was chosen FDDI as more advanced technology at that moment. Therefore works on creation of the network could be considered as a scientific research.

In 1997 several dozens scientific institutes has been connected to UMOS. UMOS provides them transparent distributed environment and access to global network on non-commercial basis.

From 1997 to 1999 many other organizations engaged in area of culture (museums, libraries), education (schools), medicine (hospitals, medical institutes) and other non-commercial organizations (funds, children clubs, etc.) have become clients of UMOS.
